Everyday, women and girls in communities around the world access multiple media outlets and their voices and stories are overwhelmingly absent. The goal of the Women's Film Institute is to increase the visibility of emerging and established female filmmakers, media-makers and storytellers.
WFI was established to address the under representation of women in the film and media industries. WFI's mission is to honor, showcase, and facilitate the creation of films that are directed or co-directed by women. We achieve our mission by supporting, promoting, exhibiting, and honoring the achievements and contributions of women in the world of cinema.
WFI supports its mission by presenting the best in women's cinema through the annual San Francisco International Women's Film Festival, WFI Shorts Tour, and year-round educational programs and events. We pride ourselves in creating programming that brings the highest quality films to the community through various genres including: narrative, documentaries, music videos, animation, and experimental works.
Our films and screenings are selected and hosted by filmmakers, professors, and other notable figures in the world of film. In addition to exhibiting the next new wave of women filmmakers, the WFI/SFWFF also makes time to pay tribute to films by women with historical significance.
WFI is committed to:
- Equity for girls and women through access, education and film.
- Providing and increasing exhibition opportunities for female filmmakers, performers, and musicians to showcase their talent and work.
- Offering free to low-cost screenings, events, workshops, and educational programs to the community led by celebrities, community activists, professors, and notable figures in the world of film.
- Providing free to low-cost film-making training and mentoring programs.
